Frequently asked questions

Are combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors reliable?

Yes! With a combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector you get double protection with a device that identifies life-threatening fire and CO. A device that identifies both smoke and CO makes sense, given that carbon monoxide often builds up as a result of fire.

With a combination detector from Vivint, you get the added protection that comes with 24/7 Monitoring. Our specialists are ready to respond to an alarm day or night whether you’re away or sound asleep in bed to ensure the safety of your family and home.

Is it better to have separate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?

Installing combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors simplifies your home's interior while maintaining safety. You'll need to change batteries less frequently, and one unit takes up less space compared to two separate ones, which is especially practical in smaller living spaces. These detectors have distinct alarms for smoke and carbon monoxide to prevent any confusion.

What's the best place to put a combination smoke CO detector?

Install your combination smoke and CO detectors in accordance with guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association:

  1. Place detectors on every level of a multi-story home, near bedrooms, and in locations required by local laws.

  2. For carbon monoxide protection, position detectors near potential sources of CO, maintaining a distance of 5-20 feet from sources like water heaters, furnaces, and space heaters. Avoid placing them too close to prevent false alarms.

  3. Install detectors near your attached garage to monitor CO emissions from running vehicles, which can become hazardous in enclosed spaces.

  4. Position detectors approximately 6 inches above or below the wall, and if ceiling-mounted, ensure they're at least 6 inches away from the wall.

  5. Maintain a distance of 5 to 15 feet from fuel-burning appliances.

  6. Ensure nothing obstructs or covers the detectors.

  7. Avoid placing detectors near exterior doors and windows. Depending on your home's size, consider adding extra detectors beyond these minimum requirements for comprehensive safety.
