One of the first smart devices to see widespread adoption was the smartphone. Now, people are using that first smart device to search for newer ones—particularly ones that make home life easier, more comfortable, and more automatic.
The team at Smart Home Solutions, an authorized provider of Vivint, analyzed Google search volume from the last five years to find out which states are the most eager students, and perhaps adopters, of smart home technology.
Whether a person punches smart home terms into Google to compare brands, buy a device online in the next 10 minutes, or just scratch an intellectual itch, the idea of the smart home has certainly gotten the country’s blood pumping. And it shows in its online search patterns.
Interesting Findings
- In 2014, there was very little search volume for smart appliances (e.g., refrigerators, washing machines), compared to other smart home gadgets (e.g., lighting, thermostats, and fans). Minnesota was a clear outlier, researching smart appliances more often than any other state.
- Minnesotans also searched more for smart outlets than any other state. These two factors helped them rank #2 nationally for the most interest in smart home tech.
- Utah had more Google search volume around smart home technology than any other state, taking the top spot in 9 of the 17 smart home terms we considered. This landed Utah the #1 ranking nationally for most interest in smart home tech.
- Wyoming had little to no search volume for 9 of our smart home terms, so the state ranked #50 for overall interest in smart home technology. That said, Wyoming did show notable interest in video doorbells, searching that exact term more often than 13 fellow states.
Methodology
To find the relative buzz around smart home technology in each state, we used Google Trends to analyze the search volume of 17 different smart home terms searched between 2014 and 2019. We ranked states for each term searched and then averaged all 17 to find each one’s overall score and rank.
The 17 terms we selected fell under four categories: smart thermostats, smart lighting, smart doorbells, and smart appliances.
